Kenyans React As Fuel Prices Drop Below Ksh 200 After Days Of Outrage

Kenyans have taken to social media and public forums to react after the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) announced a reduction in fuel prices, bringing petrol and diesel back below the Ksh200 mark. The move comes just days after widespread outrage when prices surged past the critical threshold.

Many Kenyans welcomed the reduction but described it as too little, too late. Online reactions showed a mix of relief and frustration, with some questioning why prices had to rise so sharply before being adjusted. Others argued that the government was simply responding to pressure rather than offering a long-term solution.

The price cuts, which saw petrol drop by Ksh9.37 and diesel by Ksh10.21, were linked to a reduction in VAT announced by Treasury Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi. However, critics say the relief does not match the earlier increases, leaving consumers still burdened by high costs.

“This is not relief, it’s a slight adjustment,” some users commented online, reflecting a common sentiment that the changes do not significantly ease the cost of living. Others pointed out that transport fares had already been increased, meaning the impact may not be felt immediately.

Despite the criticism, a section of Kenyans expressed cautious optimism, hoping that the move could signal further reductions in the coming weeks. Some also called for more transparency in how fuel prices are calculated, urging authorities to prioritize affordability.

The reaction highlights growing public sensitivity around fuel pricing, as it directly affects transport, food prices, and daily expenses. With economic pressure still high, many Kenyans say they will continue to monitor future price reviews closely.
